The New York Giants continue to steamroll through the league, tied with the Tennessee Titans for best in the league at 11-1. This time, it was a rain-soaked NFC East division battle with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins were stacked against the Giants’ run, so the Giants responded by throwing for over 300 yards to beat the ‘Skins 23-7.
There is little doubt that this win for the Giants helps the Cowboys. It puts the Cowboys firmly in second place in the division and if the season ended today, the Cowboys would be in the playoffs on a wild card slot in the NFC. However, the ‘Boys face a tough stretch of games to round out the season, and they will need to dig deep to avoid the late-season slump that has plagued them in recent years. Missing the playoffs will be unbearable for a team that was favored to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season.
CORRECTION: If the playoffs ended today, the Cowboys would NOT be in the playoffs, contrary to my previous statement. The Panthers and the Falcons would take up the two wild card slots in the NFC. I was distracted by all the shiny graphics the NFL network kept showing that had the Panthers and Cowboys in the wild card slots, but didn’t consider that those graphics were shown BEFORE Sunday’s games. The Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys are tied at 8-4, but the Falcons own a tiebreaker with a (barely) better conference record at 5-3 vs. the Dallas’ 6-4.
