Pacman Jones Gets One Last Chance

December 1, 2008 Posted by: Dan Horne

CB Adam “Pacman” Jones will be active for week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, after having last played in week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals. Jones, who was suspended for the entire 2007 season for various run-ins with the law, was again suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on October 14, 2008 after mixing it up in a restaurant bathroom with one of his team issued bodyguards.

The general consensus is that this is Pacman’s last chance. Any further violation of the league’s personal conduct policy will most likely result in Jones being permanently banned from the league. The Cowboys, for their part, are welcoming Jones back with open arms.

Some fans and pundits have suggested that Pacman hasn’t even played all that well this season, and therefore isn’t nearly as important to this team as he once seemed. I agree with this viewpoint, to a certain degree. Jones played fairly well in his six games prior to being suspended, registering 6 passes defended (more than any other Dallas CB this season, see update below) and 25 tackles. In comparison, Terence Newman has also played in only 6 games this season due to injury and he has registered only 4 passes defended and 21 tackles. The difference-maker there is that Newman has gotten 2 interceptions to Jones’ zero. Anthony Henry, who has played in every game this season, has 39 tackles and 4 passes defended, throwing in 2 sacks and an INT for good measure.

The thing is, yes, those are decent numbers for Jones in 6 games, but do the Cowboys really need him? Subbing in for Newman, Henry and Jones this season are two rookies: first round draft pick Mike Jenkins and fifth rounder Orlando Scandrick. Both have played well for rookies, with Scandrick playing better than the first rounder, in my opinion. With the continuing development of these two rookie CB’s, Adam Jones becomes less of a necessity and more of a simple distraction. If I were Jerry Jones, I would have to think very hard about whether the Cowboys, who seem somehow fragile this season, can really afford the circus Jones brings. Does anyone really think that Jones will be trouble-free for the rest of the year?

UPDATE: I’ve been seeing several reports on this that say Pacman has 11 passes deflected so far this season. I don’t know where this information is coming from, because the official stats on NFL.com say that Jones has 6 passes defended as of this post.
