Steelers Better at Drafting than the Cowboys?

Matt Cordon over at knowyourdallascowboys.com has posted an excellent breakdown of the history of the Dallas Cowboys/Pittsburgh Steelers matchup. The article goes even further by analyzing and comparing some of the draft picks the two teams have made over the years. Conclusion? Read it for yourself here, but it looks like the Steelers edge the ‘Boys when it comes to picking long-term winners. Here’s an excerpt:

Super Bowl titles: n/aObviously, all of these stats weigh in the Steelers’ favor. My friend argued that the Steelers have proven time and again that they draft better than the Cowboys, and this proved to him that the Mendenhall pick was better than the Jones pick for Dallas. He also argued that Dallas has been generally inferior to the Steelers because Pittsburgh has remained dedicated to developing players from within, while Dallas has relied too heavily on signing free agents.
Frankly, he’s right about the last couple of points.
Now, I like Jerry Jones. I like the way he has worked tirelessly to make the Cowboys one of the most popular teams in the NFL. I like the way he is willing to spend the cash necessary to make this a winning team through free agency and resigning our best players to long-term contracts. However, it remains my opinion that his insistence on being the general manager is detrimental to the team. In that position, he has final say over players drafted, and the simple fact is that he is not very good at it. Of course people have been saying this for years, and he is still the GM, so I’m pretty much just wasting my breath (er… keystrokes?). Then again, with moves like this, maybe Jerry should get out on the field…
