I’ve been out of the loop for the past few days with a couple of illnesses (one mine, one not), so I’m sorry for the lack of updates. There’s been a bit of scuttlebutt around about the Cowboys in my absence, so here is a round-up of the more important stories.
First of all, I must mention that NFL Films has put up a great recap of the Giants-Cowboys game from last week. I just love those NFL Films game highlights. Gravelly voice? Check! Awesome melodramatic music? Check! Hi-res slow-mo of a football spiraling its way through the air? Check, check and check!
There’s more he-said-she-said going on with T.O. and the press. After calling Ed Werder a liar multiple times, T.O. said in an interview that he believes that someone did indeed say those mean things about him. Implied in the admission is the belief that Ed Werder did NOT actually make anything up. Being a world-renowned empath (not really), I think that T.O. simply misstated his belief that Werder lied. He probably knew that Werder had a real source, his problem was evidently that the SOURCE lied and Werder didn’t do enough fact-checking before running with the story. That’s what my superpowers tell me, anyway. I’m not providing any links because ProFootballTalk seems to be down right now and that’s how I roll. Except on Shabbos. I don’t roll on Shabbos.
Injuries: Romo looks good to play Saturday in the last home game in Texas Stadium against the Ravens. His back is sore, but he’s a trooper (so long as his pinkie doesn’t hurt). Barber is again a game-time decision. I say let him rest until the playoffs (or next season, whichever comes first). His limited production while hurt can impede Dallas’ playoff run. Finally, Adam “Pacman” Jones is expected to play Saturday, after premature rumors of the end of his career due to a dirty play by the Steelers two weeks ago. Fortunately for him and the Cowboys, the injury wasn’t nearly as bad as the initial reports from the press. Also, it turns out that it wasn’t the dirty play in question that caused the injury, it was a pre-existing condition that was aggravated by the dirty play. Did I mention it was a dirty play?
There’s a good article on the Dallas Morning News’ Cowboys Blog about the spectacular performance of several of the Cowboys’ late round draft picks from the past few years, including Jay Ratliff and rookies Tashard “Tasters” Choice and Orlando Scandrick.
And finally, Demarcus Ware is on his way to breaking the single-season sack record set by Michael Strahan. The record is 22 and 1/2 sacks, while Ware has 19 with 2 games left to play. That’s 4 sacks to break the record. Can he do it? I believe he can, going up against rookie quarterback Joe Flacco this week and Donovan McNabb next week, but it won’t be easy.
