Still in the Hunt

Even with Dallas’ gutwrenching loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, enough happened in the rest of the league on Sunday to keep the Cowboys in the playoff hunt. With the Eagles’ loss to the Redskins and the Buccaneers’ loss to San Diego, the Cowboys only needed Atlanta to lose and they would have kept their statistical 5th seed. Unfortunately, Atlanta won, clinching the 5th seed for themselves. After everything has shaken out, using everybody’s favorite analogy, ‘If the playoffs started today…”, the Cowboys currently hold the 6th and final seed. This means two things:
First, there will definitely not be any type of postseason game at Texas Stadium. It would have taken a miracle if the Cowboys had the 5th seed, but with the 6th there is no possible way. Secondly, and more importantly, the Cowboys will play the Eagles next weekend for a straight-up play-in game. The Cowboys are now the conductors of their own train, able to punch their own ticket to the Playoffs. All they need is one good game.
Me? I halfway wish it’d just be over so the firings can begin and Dallas can come up with a team AND coaching staff that is 100% committed to the win. What? Did I just say I hope the Cowboys miss the playoffs this year? No, of course not, but there is a part of me that knows the ‘Boys are too banged up to go deep into the playoffs. Maybe this will be the year we break the playoff curse, though, and finally win a game in the postseason. As it stands now, we’d be playing Minnesota in the wildcard round, and that is a winnable game for the Cowboys. Of course so were the Seahawks two years ago, and so (I thought at the time) were the Giants last year.
