5 Points on the Star

January 24, 2009 Posted by: Dan Horne

cowboys2Welcome to another edition of 5 Points on the Star, the place where I back up and punt with a link post just so I can get an easy one up on the board.  And with that grand introduction…

5 more interesting things from the peak of Cowboy Mountain:

The 1st Point

Everybody’s down on the Cowboys right now.  Everybody loves to hate T.O., Wade, Jerry Jones, and even Romo is getting his fair share of hate nowadays.   I agree with most of what Aikman said, though.  Romo needs to get serious about this job.  The haters will always hate, but I’m seriously getting tired of “fire Phillips”, “fire Garrett” (although I’ve been a promoter of that concept), “cut T.O.”, “cut Romo”, etc.  Destructive solutions are iffy.  Sometimes you get better by dumping everyone and “rebuilding”, but it isn’t the best way to take a talented team further.  Better to work out the kinks in what we know can be a stellar team (see 13-3).  With the possible exception of Garrett, unless he can learn to CONTROL his offense, I think the rest of the destructive solutions are counterproductive.

The 2nd Point

Not everyone is down.  Here are some more constructive opinions:

The 3rd Point

Here’s an interesting historical tidbit.  It’s a look at the battle between the new NFL expansion Dallas Cowboys and the upstart AFL Dallas Texans.

How the 1960 Cowboys Outlasted the 1960 Texans

The 4th Point

Here’s a crazy what-if situation.  What if Larry Fitzgerald had wound up with the Cowboys?

Me: “Larry, Larry needs to be playing for the Cowboys. They desperately need a wide receiver to replace that no-good rat … (OK, I went into my usual Eldorado Owens rant, which Mr. Fitzgerald kind of ignored.)

Larry Sr.: “Larry’s favorite team is the Cowboys. There is no place Larry would rather be than Dallas.”

Ah-ha. Now we’ve got a foundation built. Even though Larry Jr. had grown up serving as a ball boy for the Vikings (his dad covered the team and had connections), now I’m being told he’s a huge fan of the Cowboys.

Plus, it was common knowledge Larry Jr. was at the end of his Cardinals contract…

The 5th Point

The Playmaker gets a new reality show.

The team has confirmed its involvement in the ex-receiver’s reality show, which will award one of 12 amateur contestants with a roster spot when the Cowboys begin camp at San Antonio’s Alamodome near the end of July. For anyone who ever wondered if they could play in the NFL, this is about as close as the Cowboys will ever get to holding an open tryout.

I know what you’re thinking.  This is ridiculous.  It’s Hard Knocks all over again.  How could Jerry Jones let this happen?  I know Irvin and Jones are close, but someone in the organization needs to use a little judgement. In fact, that’s exactly what I wrote before I sat back and really thought it over.  Turns out, I love it.  Hard Knocks was great.  Did it affect the Cowboys’ season?  Maybe, but I still Tivo’ed every episode and watched them all multiple times.
